A new home for artistic variety
Website relaunch and the development of a variable font
Haus der Kunst is a public museum without its own collection and a world-leading center for contemporary art. The program primarily demonstrates that contemporary art is global and multifaceted, without geographical or cultural boundaries. It takes different perspectives into account and creates an interdisciplinary program of high artistic quality and cultural relevance. We wanted to do justice to precisely this claim with the website relaunch.
The website, which at first glance seems rather simple, is brought to life above all by the content. It retells artistic storytelling in the digital world. The website offers the opportunity to engage with art as an energy of transformation and creates new space for flexibility and unconventional digital experiences.
The focus of the development was primarily on modularity and permeability. This means that different themes can be related to each other and thus take on new meaning. These connections are by no means static. Rather, they can be reinterpreted again and again - this gives the art the freedom and the necessary air to breathe and establishes connections that were previously not apparent.
The newly conceived fragments serve as carriers of these different relationships. These can be freely combined with each other and thus open up a new field of artistic vision. They show: Openness, movement and a juxtaposition of different positions and narratives. Although the design is based on a strict grid, it knows how to conceal it. This creates a progressive rhythm. A connection that can be felt in the Haus der Kunst. Now also digital.
The resulting dynamics of these fragments were further developed and also applied to the design and handling of typography. The development of a variable font, which can adapt to the user's scrolling movements, enables the dynamics to be extended to other areas of the website. This also brings liveliness to the artistic presentations.
We do not view accessibility as an additional optimization at the end of the development process, but plan to make every UI component as accessible as possible during implementation. This also applies to the development of the Haus der Kunst website. The requirements are therefore already part of the detailed concept and design.
